Turkey differentiates clearly between residence permits (for those living in Turkey without working) and work permits (for those employed by Turkish entities). Understanding which you need prevents costly mistakes.
Short-Term Residence Permit
Valid for 1–2 years and renewable. Suitable for retirees, remote workers, property owners, and anyone not employed by a Turkish company. Apply at e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr. Required documents include health insurance, proof of accommodation, and bank statements showing sufficient funds.
Work Permit
Required if you are employed by a Turkish company or institution. Your employer applies on your behalf to the Ministry of Labour. The process takes 4–8 weeks. Work permits automatically grant a residence permit.
Digital Nomad Considerations
Turkey does not yet have a formal digital nomad visa. Remote workers employed by foreign companies technically require a short-term residence permit. In practice, many remote workers operate on tourist visa extensions, but this creates legal ambiguity. Consult a Turkish immigration lawyer if your situation is complex.
